The Monte Carlo winning P was sprayed light metallic blue – Allard’s did use some metallic colours I know of dark green metallic (horrible colours) dark blue metallic with silvery bits in it! Yours Peter Love

I am almost certain that metallic paint was available around the late 40s, Diederik. My mother had a ’51 Triumph Mayflower whose paint was certainly metallic grey. The paint supplier mentioned by Ben would also probably be able to confirm whether the metallic was around then. Do you have a recent picture of your Allard to post up, btw? Tim.

I am not sure about the existence of metallic paint in the late 40’s/50’s. Photographs I have seen of the Monte Carlo winning P1 almost suggest that it was painted metallic blue, but I am ready to be corrected about this.

I’m afraid I know very little about paint / historic paint codes but for what it’s worth I’m planning on painting my Allard P1 fastback in a lighter silver colour and having taken some advice from a very knowledgable chap at Bailey Paints in Stroud, UK will probably choose the “White aluminium” from the RAL colour chart (see link below).

It might be worth a call to Baileys for a chat, they’re super helpful and really know their stuff, they offered me a lot of useful advice on primers for steel vs aluminium for example.

I would like to repaint my car in a darkish grey colour.( like very much the bullet grey)

Does anyone know of reference numbers that were used or colour descriptions? I presume metallic did not exist at the time?

                    thanks,
